U.P Government has ordered bifurcation of UPTU into 2 separate universities namely Gautam Buddha Technical University and Mahamaya Technical University with effect from 1st of july, 2010.

Uttar Pradesh Technical University was set up by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on May 8, 2000. According to the university's website, it was the biggest technical university in Asia.
