HT Job Fair in NCR at ABES IT, 10-12 FEBRUARY, 2011

The next Shine(HT) Job Fair 2011 in NCR will be held from 10th to 12th February 2011at  ABES IT Campus, Ghaziabad

ABES IT Group of Institutions
Campus-2, 19th Km. Stone,
National Highway - 24
Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad (UP) Pin – 201009

Message from ABES IT:

We intend to keep improving our proposition and positioning in this area and hence are endeavouring to develop a systematic and defined process where every stakeholder is satisfied and it is a Win-Win for all. The highlights of this fair are:
  • Announcement has been made 7 months in advance giving ample time to prepare for us as well as the students.
  • All India announcement has been made with a view to inviting top students and campanies from all over the country.
  • Besides college registrations, individual student registrations will also be opened this time and a proper screening of students would be done. This will also ensure that the pressure which most of us have faced last time from different sources will be avoided and every student whether his/her college takes an active participation or not will have the scope of being part of this fair.
  • Number of days is being increased from 2 to 3 with a view to inviting exclusive companies or companies with job profiles offering packages which may be pegged at a minimum of 4 lacs.
  • Student registrations will be closed at least three months before the fair so that the companies can be sent all the student data and the first day specially would be by appointment with companies predefining the students that they would like to interview.
  • We will hold our annual cutural festival in November where all job fair participants would be invited to take part as well as be given their unique photo id cards to participate in the job fair.
  • All eligible students of ABES IT Group of Institutions would be allowed to participate and we may cancel participation of miscreants as decided through the Proctorial Board.

Experiences in Hiring B.Scs and BCAs in India in 2009 and 2010

At the outset, I would like to state that  I run an organization, which specializes in training and placements of junior IT manpower. It has been run successfully for the past 4 years and has many of the major IT players as its clients. In this article, I am sharing some of the learnings we have gained through our experience.

For the last of couple years, specially duriing and after the debable of 2009, all the IT companies have been looking at multiple ways of cutting their costs. Since, the major portion of an IT consulting firms cost is "Resource Cost", their has been lot of focus in reducing the "resource cost". One of the levers, some of the top IT firms have been focussing hard is using lesse qualified candidates at the entry level. What they are essentially doing is hiring B.Sc.(Maths), B.Sc.(IT), BCAs and BBAs instead of BE/BTech, MCA and MBA. The idea being to put this group on a lower pay structure.

We have been helping some of the top names with this kind of hiring under the Train and Deploy model, where we provide trainings to these candidates on particular technology area. Off late, we have noticed that, it is getting difficult to source these profiles, primarily because of the following reasons:

1. Most of the IT companies want 60%+ marks through out. These days, here are very few students, who get 60% marks in 10th and 12th and they do BSc. Most of them would land upo doing BE/BTech from private engineering college.

2. BCA students have learnt that it is better to spend one more year and do MCA rather than taking up the job as BCA and being at a different grade throughout the career.

3. Most of the BCA institutes don't want to loose their BCA students to the jobs, since they are their cusomers for MCA and hence they keep these students under strong influence and ensure that they don't take jobs.

4. Communication skills are very poor amongst this group as a lot of them don't have the right atmosphere at home and they land up not clearing the communication/HR round.

Given the above reasons, there is an acute shortage of BCA, BSc(Maths), BSc(IT) students with good academic track record and communication skiils. Most of the 2010 passouts had more than two goos job offers. This demand and supply gap is leading to a lot of good students opting for BCA and BSc(IT) instead of doing BTechs at private colleges. So, if you are a corporate and would like to use this lever, you will need to have this well planned out with proper research on colleges and their catchment areas.

IIM-Kozhikode and IIT-Kanpur forge an alliance with Yale University: HRD Ministry

In a step towards enhancing educational links with the US, the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode and the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur are tying up with the Yale University for collaboration in higher education.

The three institutes signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday for cooperation in higher education through research, a statement from the human resource development (HRD) ministry said. Under the ‘Yale-India Leadership Initiative’, the partnership will begin with a term of five years and can be renewed after that. A six-member committee with equal participation from the three partnering institutes will determine the norms/qualifications for participating in these leadership programmes.

“This tie-up will expose university and academic leaders in India at the levels of vice-chancellor, director, and deans to the best practices of academic administration and institutional management in the United States,” HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said after the MoU was signed. The MoU would also engage in joint faculty research on higher education and collaborate to organise workshops and seminars on relevant areas of academic administration and leadership. The first programmes under the agreement would take place in 2011 in New Haven, Connecticut.

“Yale is pleased to undertake this important and much needed effort on higher education with IIM -Kozhikode and IIT-Kanpur. We look forward to working with them to advance the cause of higher education in India by sharing what we have learned over three centuries as an institution and we similarly look forward to learning from our partners in India in this age of global education,” Yale president Richard Levin said.

The partnership will take effect from January 2011.
